You Saw It Here First: The Stow

Ahead of their London Cargo gig tonight we caught up with London's best-kept secret The Stow. This brand new band fuse soulful melodies alongside great lyrical ability, to bring a sound that's completely fresh 'n' new! Check out what they had to say about breaking into the music industry...

What makes you different from any other group out at the moment?
Shi: We write everything, music, lyrics everything! Obviously we have a rapper and singer fronting the band and we are all great music lovers – we have been able to bring all our influences and put them into our music. That has given us a sound that I would say is unique.

What things or experiences have influenced your music?
Life is the only influence in our music. Everyday experiences be it positive or negative, from talking about a quickie in the morning to childhood abuse and addictions, our topics are a reflection of our thoughts at any given time.

How would you describe your sound?
We fuse a lot of different genres together from the influences that we all have and at the end of it all we have 'The Stow' sound. I don't know how to describe our sound in more detail than that...it's just different...it's us!

How did you get into music?
Hadyn: We’ve always had a passion for the art form, be it Classical, Hip Hop, Rock, music is such a powerful force its cliché but really is a universal language

What's the biggest challenge when trying to break the music industry?
Have you ever tried to crush an egg by the top and bottom of the egg? Try it... it's impossible! When you get bored of trying hit it in the middle! That’s how I deal with the music industry I keep throwing out HITS till one cracks it.

What has been the highlight and lowlight of the journey so far?
Thankfully there have been a lot of highlights so far with Glastonbury being the most recent, but there has been so many big and small things like people who you don't know you from Adam loving what you do going out their way to let you know that. It's a great feeling and thankfully we have had a lot of support in that respect.... Lowlight - I don’t know if its a low light, but we still haven't got no management yet.... that would be nice.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do with your life?
Hadyn: The second that I realised that I could get paid to tell people my life in rhyme.
Shi: I've always loved singing and once my auntie told me to turn the radio down when it was actually me singing. She said I had a great voice and could be a singer...I was 8 years old and the rest is history!

How did the tracks You don't know me, Over The Edge and Life's come about?
Hadyn: I’m not very good with the ladies so it was just a tongue in cheek song telling some of my thoughts about when I’m out on the town

Over the Edge
Music is hard egg to crack ;) and when it’s your whole life it can be determinately to the rest of your life, be it your financial situation, relationships friends the more focused I became the harder the rest of life became....

Life’s A bitch
Hadyn: I was writing at the same time of over the edge the original was a lot more depressing, now its just a fun little story about a prostitute, a copper and fluffy handcuffs...loll!

What is the dream?
Hadyn: To have a hotel in the Maldives selling cocktails to the rich and famous!!!

Shi: I don't think so Haydn lol!! The dream for me is to have our music appreciated Internationally and to be able to make a living doing what we love to do.

Where do you see yourselves in five years?
Hadyn: In one or two places either just finishing our second album or in an office block somewhere in front of a computer watching the clock tick away my life.
Shi: I refuse to let the latter option happen!

We hope the gig goes extremely well for this sensational group.Tonight's gig is taking place at Cargo, Shoreditch from 8pm. Tickets on the door are from £7.

Film | American Express Screen Talks : Mark Romanek

When: 14th October 2010
Where: BFI Southbank

Details as follows:
Tickets: £17.50
Start: 8:00pm

54th BFI London Film Festival event...
The director Mark Romanek of our joins the BFI to discuss his stunning music video work and his thought provoking feature films.

As a music video director, Mark Romanek seized the opportunity to create visually stunning and highly original works that challenge and provoke the audience, encouraging us to open our eyes wider. Among such videos as Michael and Janet Jackson's 'Scream' and Red Hot Chilli Peppers' 'Don't Stop', two music videos stand out from the rest for their sophisticated references to contemporary and historical art. Nine Inch Nails' 'Closer' pays homage to photographer Joel-Peter Witkin and Madonna's 'Bedtime Story' nods to female surrealist painters such as Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. It is testament to the artistic merit of these music videos that they have become part of the permanent collection at MoMA in New York. Romanek admits to being heavily influenced by visionary directors such as Scorsese, Cassavetes, Fassbinder, Herzog, and Fellini, but above all by Stanley Kubrick and with his features Static (1985) and One Hour Photo(2002), Romanek joined the ranks of talented music video auteurs who have transitioned into the world of feature filmmaking. In our brilliant Opening Night Film Never Let Me Go, the beautifully subtle colour palette compliments the melancholy of the story and enhances the impeccable performances that Romanek has drawn out of his talented cast. His masterful handling of Alex Garland's script (from Kazuo Ishiguro's novel) has resulted in a haunting and delicate film that lingers in one's memory long after viewing.

Facebook in one way or another has changed the way we interacted forever. The Social Network is a movie about how it all began in a college dorm in Harvard. We are shown the highs and lows of creating a business from one single idea to losing friends in the process and creating a few enemies.
From the trailer already this film serves to me in being a motivational tool, realising that truly everything is possible and that it takes balls in doing it.
The Social Network will be out on release this October.
